Remembering a Faithful Servant and a Founding Father of Malta House

On May 28, 2025, Monsignor William J. Scheyd, beloved priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport for 60 years, was called home at the age of 85. His life was defined by unwavering devotion to God and compassionate service to every person he encountered.

In the early 1990s, when a small group dreamed of opening a home for young pregnant women experiencing homelessness, the late Father Jerry Devore suggested they enlist Msgr. Scheyd, then pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Norwalk. From that first meeting, Msgr. Scheyd became one of the five co-founders of Malta House. His leadership, vision, and encouragement planted the seed that grew into our thriving community.

A Legacy of Generosity and Wisdom

Throughout Malta House’s history, Msgr. Scheyd offered counsel—always friendly, often witty whenever we faced a challenge. He rolled up his sleeves to lend a hand, from securing resources to celebrating milestones, and prayed tirelessly for our residents, partners, and staff, believing in hope and second chances.

“Without Monsignor Scheyd, there would be no Malta House,” reflects Michael O’Rourke. He was one of those instrumental “doers” who got the ball rolling and never stopped.

Honoring His Memory

From our beginning and now with his passing, Malta House has been a beneficiary of Msgr. Scheyd’s prayers and support. We were blessed when we learned that Msgr. Scheyd’s family asked that gifts be made to Malta House in his name, in lieu of flowers at his funeral.

This Fall, our Board of Directors will unveil a lasting memorial that honors Msgr. Scheyd’s generosity and kindness, ensuring his legacy continues to bless those we serve and partner with.
